Text: Thess 2:7-12   (King James Version) When Saul became Paul

  "Father, I am your servant, willing and desiring to be used to bless your people."

                            The Fields are white and the laborers are few!
C.H. Spurgeon said, "If God does not save a man by truth he certainly will not save them by lies, and if the old gospel is not competent to work a revival, then we will do without the revival;"

The Book of Revelations contains several prophecies that integrate into one big story. Some prophecies in Revelation have been underway for centuries and others are about to begin.

The book of Revelation describes the seven trumpets and the seven  bowls as the seven first plagues and the seven last plagues .  14 events

Jesus told his disciples "I have told you before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe." (John 14:20)  Because the bible gives the order of coming events in 14 steps, it is possible to identify and anticipate each phase of the great tribulation. If knowing the order of these horrific are important then knowing the purpose of these are even more important.  Each person needs to know that god has deliberately  and purposefully designed the Great Tribulation to accomplish several strategic objectives. The Bible indicates that God initiates, God controls and God terminates the Great Tribulation. God has three types of wrath, Redemptive, Destructive, and Annihilation. According to the bible, God will use redemptive and destructive wrath before Jesus appears at the second coming. The seven first judgments (seven trumpets) are redemptive in nature. The idea is simple: God mixes mercy with his judgments so that, if possible, many people will choose salvation and be redeemed. God will use redemptive judgments to open the minds and the ears of billions of people to consider a Gospel of Grace and not of works upon acceptance. He will use the 144 thousand anointed with the Holy spirit power to preach this everlasting Gospel and millions of people will indeed receive Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Unfortunately an even larger number of people will reject the gospel and rebel against the authority of the coming King of Kings and after 1,260 days, God will terminate his offer of salvation and God will implement a second type of wrath called "destructive wrath"

God will use this type of wrath during the last seven plagues or bowls. Rev 15:1 The third type of Gods wrath is Eternal Annihilation. God has never implemented this type of wrath on the earth before.

The book of revelation confirms the good news that most people want to hear: A world of eternal joy and endless bliss is coming. The bad news is that God is going to test the inhabitants of Earth that missed the catching away of the saints. Or The rapture of the Church.

The first seven plagues are called  "seven Trumpets" because they serve the purpose if warning or awakening the people of Earth to the Glorious arrival of Jesus Christ.  The Last seven plagues are called the seven bowls because they represent seven full cups of Gods vengeance that he will pour out upon his enemies.

Our first sermon on this topic we covered the fact :

The Great Tribulation will begin suddenly. It will begin with a Global Earthquake that effectively disrupts the activities of the whole world.

The World has never witnessed anything like the coming judgments of God, nor could it sustain more than one visitation.

Now that we have had a brief overview of what God is about to do, we need further examine the first four trumpets of revelation. During the great tribulation many survivors

Unfortunately will refuse to understand Gods actions because they have hearts like Pharaoh. Even after God sent ten plagues upon Egypt Pharaoh refused to submit to Gods authority/

2 Thessalonians 2:7   For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.

2 Thessalonians 2:8   And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

2 Thessalonians 2:9   Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2 Thessalonians 2:10   And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

2 Thessalonians 2:11   And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2 Thessalonians 2:12   That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Many scientist that have made it up to this point will deny that the first four trumpet events are ACTS of GOD. They will try and convince  that these calamities are natures random curse that they have been foretelling for years.

Revelation 8:2   And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.

Revelation 8:3   And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.

Revelation 8:4   And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.

Revelation 8:5   And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

Revelation 8:6   And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound.

Revelation 8:7   The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

Revelation 8:8   And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

Revelation 8:9   And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

Revelation 8:10   And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

Revelation 8:11   And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Revelation 8:12   And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

Let's pray. Father,

Open my eyes so I can see Your truth.

Open my ears so I can hear Your voice.
Open my mind so I can understand Your Word.
And open my heart so I may receive all that You want me to receive. AMEN

A few days after the Global earthquake and physical display of Gods powers, Revelation predicts much of the Earth will be set on fire by a giant firestorm of burning hail (small Meteorites)

This fiery hail will ignite unquenchable fires all over the world burning up 1/3  of the trees and the green grass! Do not think this far fetched. Our planet routinely experiences meteoric hailstorms every year. These annual events happen when the Earth passes through fields of space debris. The gravity of the Earth and the Orbit of space debris gives the appearance of shooting stars. These are white hot chunks of space debris and as the debris enters our atmosphere at speed of 60.000 plus thousand miles per hour, atmospheric friction causes the debris to become white hot. So far these annual displays have nbot been a serious threat and usually never reaches the earth. But this will be quite different when the first trumpet judgment occurs.

Think of the consequences when millions of white hot rocks rain down on the Earth.

Remember the great Chicago fire of 1871. Listen to this Many Scientist  now believe that this great fire was not caused by Mrs. O'leary's  cow kicking over a lantern, but by a shower of fiery meteors. Historical Evidence now shows that a string of fires were ignited  along a straight line stretching about two hundred miles across the north central part of the USA that very same night. In fact the entire town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin mysteriously caught fire that night and burned to the ground. Survivors of the city told of seeing streaks of fire falling out of the sky.

The Great ball of Fire.

The Judgment that follows the firestorm of burning meteors is an asteroid impact.

Revelation 8:8   And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;

Revelation 8:9   And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

This scene describes a large asteroid the size of a mountain hitting the sea. If an asteroid one mine in diameter was sitting on the surface of the earth it would be called a mountain. 5,380 feet high. So this is an accurate description.

The Tidal wave caused by this asteroid would destroy ships hundreds of miles away in every direction. Think about the commotion if the ocean after such an impact. An Asteroid of this magnitude would be so hot by the time it hit the ocean that it would make the ocean water anoxic. "Oxygen Deficient" by boiling the oxygen out of large area of the sea. Sea temps would rise dramatically  and the hot water would kill billions of sea creatures.  This warmed anoxic water would also provide a perfect environment for the growth of red algae what is know as red tide. When John said the sea turned to blood he may have been describing the appearance of red algae that thrives in oxygen deficient water.

Ball of fire 2

The very next judgment is a great asteroid impact on a continent. John describes a great star that impacts the earth.

Revelation 8:10   And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters;

Revelation 8:11   And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Many  prophecy scholars maintain this could not be literal but rather symbolic. I do not be this at all for these reasons. 1) each event is physically consistent with the literal outcome john describes. Two if these are symbolic where is the explanation or interpretations of these symbols within the bible?   How can symbolic people drink symbolic water?

What would be the consequences of a large asteroid  like this blazing like a torch hitting the earth.

The university of southern California has created a model  and it indicates that ground waves would sheer water wells and sewer lines for hundreds of miles in all directions. Earthquakes and tremors would continue for many days as enormous tectonic forces beneath the surface of the earth adjust to the impact. Everything within two hundred miles of impact would be vaporized.  It would release the energy of thousands of nuclear bombs. So one of the first casualties would be the drinking water. Broken sewer systems, underground toxic waste buried in landfills would flow into the river supplies that provide drinking water for millions of people

In Jeremiah 9:13   And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;

Jeremiah 9:14   But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:

Jeremiah 9:15   Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.

By comparing rev 8:10-11 to Jer 9-13 It is very clear why this asteroid is called wormwood. "Wormwood means poisonous.

In the early 1980's few geologists and geoscientist s accepted the theory that giant asteroids the size of a mountain had ever impacted our planet. Today with the help of computers, satellites and better equipment they have now discovered more than 150 enormous impact sites on our planet. the three largest are in Canada, South Africa and off the eastern coast of Mexico. Each of these have a diameter of 120 to 150 miles.

In 1990 scientist published findings pertaining to the crater discovered in Arizona. This crater was less than two thirds of a mile wide and was 640 feet deep. Their findings was astonishing.  A tiny meteor less than two hundred feet wide and travelling about 35,000 miles per hour did this. Now scientist are in agreement that sooner or later the gravitational field will indeed attract one or several of the civilization threatening asteroids.

The judgments of God do not end with two asteroid impacts

Revelation 8:12   And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

The fourth judgment follows the first three trumpets and the result is the sun, the moon and the stars go dark. It is very conceivable that the darkness that John saw is similar to what occurred in the northwestern part of the USA during Mount St. Helens eruption in 1990. At midday it looked like it was midnight. There was no light. Although Revelation does not say why the Sun, moon and stars turn dark this worldwide phenomenon would be consistent with volcanic eruptions. The cumulative effects of a giant earthquake and two asteroid impacts could certainly disrupt the fragile balance of the earths tectonic plates. And as the plates strain to re adjust enormous energy would be released, hundreds of volcanoes could erupt spewing magma and ash in a series of explosions that would dwarf the blasts of Mt. Saint Helens.

Consider this.

The first three trumpets send megatons of dust, soot and debris into the atmosphere.  Causing extended darkness around the globe. Millions of acres on fire burning from the meteor showers. Entering into our jetstream being carried all across the globe could completely put two thirds of the worlds population in the dark.

Now you have a whole other problem. The absence of sunlight for an extended period of time will produce famine.

John Predicts a third of the earth was burned up a third of the trees and a third of all the green grass. Here is what we now have on the stage as God gets the attention of the people.

1/3 of the Earth Burned up

1/3 of the trees Burned up

1/3 of the sea will turn into blood

1/3 of the Earth Burned up

1/3 of the sea creatures will die

1/3 of the ships will sink

1/3 of the Rivers and Springs will become contaminated

1/3 of the light of the sun will be taken away

1/3 of the light of the moon will be taken away

1/3 of the light of the stars will be taken away

1/3 of the day will be without light

1/3 of the night will be without light

1/3 of  all mankind will be killed

What is God trying to tell us about the repetitive use of 1/3 Would you believe it has to do with his generosity. God destroys 1/3 but leaves 2/3

In Biblical times when a tribal nation refused to pay tribute to a king who claimed higher authority over there territory, it was common practice for the offended king to attack the defiant city and totally destroy it. Men, women and children. Deut 2:34 3:6

However if the kink was in a generous mood he might spare 1/3 of the nation from destruction and maintain some of his tax base. In 2 Sam 8:2 you find King David using this principal. David defeated the Moabites who refused to pay him tribute and caused them to lie down in the ground and measured them off with a length of a cord. Every two lengths if them were put to death and the third length was allowed to live. The surviving Moabites became subject to David .

So the repetitive use of 1/3 within the seven trumpets declares Gods generosity with a defiant and rebellious world.  So you see the trumpet judgments are redemptive in nature. If a generous King spared 1/3 of a rebellious nation in ancient times, what can be said of the King of Kings who spared two thirds of the elements mentions in these trumpets.

Next Sermon we will look at how the remaining humans respond to this Holy and Offended God!
