Text: Joshua 7:1-26 (King James Version)

"Father, I am your servant, willing and desiring to be used to bless your people."

The Fields are white and the laborers are few!
C.H. Spurgeon said, "If God does not save a man by truth he certainly will not save them by lies, and if the old gospel is not competent to work a revival, then we will do without the revival;"

Joshua 7:1   But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the accursed thing: for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed thing: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against the children of Israel.

Joshua 7:2   And Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Bethaven, on the east side of Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the country. And the men went up and viewed Ai.

Joshua 7:3   And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.

Joshua 7:4   So there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of Ai.

Joshua 7:5   And the men of Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as water.

Joshua 7:6   And Joshua rent his clothes, and fell to the earth upon his face before the ark of the LORD until the eventide, he and the elders of Israel, and put dust upon their heads.

Joshua 7:7   And Joshua said, Alas, O Lord GOD, wherefore hast thou at all brought this people over Jordan, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? would to God we had been content, and dwelt on the other side Jordan!

Joshua 7:8   O Lord, what shall I say, when Israel turneth their backs before their enemies!

Joshua 7:9   For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land shall hear of it, and shall environ us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do unto thy great name?

Joshua 7:10   And the LORD said unto Joshua, Get thee up; wherefore liest thou thus upon thy face?

Joshua 7:11   Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.

Joshua 7:12   Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the accursed from among you.

Joshua 7:13   Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow: for thus saith the LORD God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.

Joshua 7:14   In the morning therefore ye shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD taketh shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

Joshua 7:15   And it shall be, that he that is taken with the accursed thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he hath: because he hath transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he hath wrought folly in Israel.

Joshua 7:16   So Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken:

Joshua 7:17   And he brought the family of Judah; and he took the family of the Zarhites: and he brought the family of the Zarhites man by man; and Zabdi was taken:

Joshua 7:18   And he brought his household man by man; and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken.

Joshua 7:19   And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.

Joshua 7:20   And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

Joshua 7:21   When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

Joshua 7:22   So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran unto the tent; and, behold, it was hid in his tent, and the silver under it.

Joshua 7:23   And they took them out of the midst of the tent, and brought them unto Joshua, and unto all the children of Israel, and laid them out before the LORD.

Joshua 7:24   And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of

Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his asses, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor.

Joshua 7:25   And Joshua said, Why hast thou troubled us? the LORD shall trouble thee this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

Joshua 7:26   And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Wherefore the name of that place was called, The valley of Achor, unto this day.

Let's pray. Father,  Open my eyes so I can see Your truth.

Open my ears so I can hear Your voice.
Open my mind so I can understand Your Word.
And open my heart so I may receive all that You want me to receive. AMEN

As I stated Wednesday Night in a continuing of Overly Confident and Abundantly Cocky!

There was a time when maintaining one's integrity was as important as breathing. However, the word integrity has almost vanished from the vocabulary of modern Americans. Its meaning is a mystery to many people. In a day when morals are crumbling around us, the call to Christians to live with integrity is a critical and challenging one. It is a noble thing to be known as a person of integrity. It means being willing to do what is right-even if it costs you. It means doing what is right-even if no one sees your actions. It requires the willingness to stand alone and. yet, no one ever stands alone who stands for God. God always stands with him or her. God sees integrity and blesses it.

A person of integrity has the blessing of the Lord. To have integrity is to be consistently and predictably honest in your dealings and relationships. It is a noble thing to be known as a person of integrity. It means being willing to do what is right-even if it costs you. It means doing what is right-even if no one sees your actions

It is possible to have the appearance of Abraham but the heart of Absalom
It is possible to have the appearance of Jude but the heart of Judas
It is possible to have the of Deborah but the heart of Delilah

The world and all it has to offer you is alluring.
If you don't have the door of disobedience closed all the way shut, there will be temptations that will lure you to do something that might not seem so bad at first, but once you give into it, it always leaves you at a place you never dreamed of ending up.

For Achan, he and his whole family suffered from his mistake. Can you imagine your 2-year old standing there looking at you before she's about to be stoned and burned and say, "dad, what have you done that we have to die this horrible death?"
Yet many in the Church are doing the very same thing.

You say Pastor how are we doing the same thing as Achan?

Although it was a single person that sinned, the children of Israel are said to have trespassed, because one of their body did it, and he was not as yet seperated from them, nor disowned by them. They did it, that is, by what Achan did guilt was brought upon the whole society of which he was a member.

1 Corinthians 12:12   For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13   For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

1 Corinthians 12:14   For the body is not one member, but many.

1 Corinthians 12:15   If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

1 Corinthians 12:16   And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?

1 Corinthians 12:17   If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?

1 Corinthians 12:18   But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.

1 Corinthians 12:19   And if they were all one member, where were the body?

1 Corinthians 12:20   But now are they many members, yet but one body.

If one part of the BODY sins it effect the WHOLE and not just the part that Sinned!

This is an accountability issue of those that are entangled thinking that they are not hurting anyone else! Hog Wash! The whole body is limping and in defeat.. God's People   all in trouble all around us and we are acting like nothing is wrong! There is something wrong! Sin is lurking somewhere in the camp and others are paying the price.

But Just like Achan it will always find you personally!

Galatians 6:7   Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Now to know that you've done something wrong is one thing, trying to hide it is another. Pride is the control in a humans mind to remain inconspicuos, wear a mask, live with a facade of character and go to hell living this way. Powerful, but true!

A man doesn't want his sin to be exposed, so he refuses to answer up and repent to change the situation.
God and Joshua are allowing Achan plenty time to 'fess up, but, instead Achan continues to hide. Until, he can't do anything but to confess when all lots fall on him. Take heed lest ye fall.

The story unfolds after one of the greatest battles the Israelites won over Jericho... God gave Joshua explicit instructions for all the people to know that all the spoil of Jericho was His. Everyone knew that!
But, because the allurement of the rainment and silver and gold had on Achan, he thought he would become God for a little bit. Taking what did not belong to him, thus not only affecting him and his family but all Israel too. "But, the children of Israel committed a trespass."

What we desire we will do! "A man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust(desire) and enticed."
Understand that it was in Achan's heart to lust or desire. It wasn't that he just slipped and made a mistake. He had a covetous heart.

God said, you reap where you do not sow, you gather where you have not reaped, and for us to think we have the right to become covetous is danger. God owns it all and if He thinks we need more or less it's His decision, not mine.

Luke 19:20   And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:

Luke 19:21   For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.

Luke 19:22   And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:

Luke 19:23   Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?

Luke 19:24   And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

1. The lust of the eyes; it wasn't the looking but the lusting that destroyed him. The love of the world is the root of all bitterness which of all others is most hardly rooted up.

2. The lust of the flesh; if it's in your mind to want it... you are what you think. Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he."

3. The pride of life

James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Friendship with the world causes hostility toward God.

The world hates the truth!

Sinful, corrupt, human thinking is always going to oppose God.

James calls those who associate with the world "adulterers and adulteresses."

James was talking about spiritual adultery.

Many who are professing to be in the Church are pursuing the things of the world
and they are on the downgrade.

There is an ongoing love affair with the world and all of its enticements.

Many church folks are more devoted to the world than their relationship with God.

2 Corinthians 6:14   Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

2 Corinthians 6:15   And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

2 Corinthians 6:16   And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

2 Corinthians 6:17   Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

2 Corinthians 6:18   And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 7:1   Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

The Wheat and the Tare.

Will everyone who goes to church go to heaven? Will every member of BMCOG make it? I would like to think that if the rapture occurred on a Sunday morning during our main service, that the room would be completely emptied, but according to this parable that would be highly unlikely.

It's a simple parable, but carries with it a profound truth.
In Matthew 13:24-13:30 It goes like this: A farmer sowed good seed on good ground, but while he slept an enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat. A tare is a poisonous weed which looks a lot like wheat in the early stages. If eaten by a person, nausea would occur, convulsions, and in certain circumstances, even death! This was a spiteful act of malice. The enemy had nothing to gain, except to ruin the wheat crop of the farmer.

When his workers realized what had been done they asked the farmer if they should begin removing the tares, and he said no, it's easier to tell the difference at harvest time. We'll bring the wheat into the barn, but we'll separate the tares into bundles and burn them.

The interpretation then is found in vv. 36-42 [read]

Matthew 13:36   Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field.

Matthew 13:37   He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;

Matthew 13:38   The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Matthew 13:39   The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.

Matthew 13:40   As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.

It's not hard to understand what the Lord Jesus is saying by way of this parable. But let's go a little deeper into the applications and the ramifications of these things..

3 elements: The sowing, the growing, and the mowing [reaping]

I. The Sowing

A. The sowing of the wheat.
v. 37 Jesus is the farmer, and the next verse points out that the wheat are the believers.

Wheat and Christians have some things in common:
Wheat doesn't have a deep root system. Wheat doesn't go very deep compared to how high it gets. It's easily pulled up and uprooted. I could say it like this: "Demas"  wheat is not firmly attached to this world. The same ought to be true of us when it comes to this earth.
Ill.-a woman lived in the same house for 82 years / war broke out / authorities said she had to leave in 15 minutes / she said, every bit of who I am is in this can I pack up and leave that quickly?

But  one day soon, and it may be today, a summons will sound in the sky and we'll leave a lot quicker than the twinkling of an eye! If you have a nice house / car that's fine, but don't get too attached, because you can't take it with you, you won't need it where you're going, and you'll never miss it, and only what we've done for Christ will matter!

Wheat doesn't last very long. Wheat grows and ripens, bears its fruit, and quickly passes off the scene. And when we get saved we grow in grace, bear what fruit God wants us to bear, and quickly fade away. I don't know how long you and I will live, but until God is through w/ us, not a hair of our heads can be touched, and after God is done w/ us, no anchor in the world can hold us here.
Ill.-in Revelation, even the antichrist cannot bring harm to God's 2 witnesses until they had finished their testimony.'

One day I'll preach my last sermon, and I don't know when, but then I'll be out of here..not off to another church, but off to another world!

One day you'll get up and do the things you usually do for the last time. Make the bed, take a bath, brush your won't realize it until you're flying thru the air, but you just did those things for the last time! [some may say, I don't remember the last time I did any of those things..we'll pray for you!]

God didn't leave us here to take up space, but to accomplish specific things for Him, and to bear fruit!

Wheat grows upward and dies downward. And we ought to become more and more alive to things above, and dead to that which is below. The Apostle Paul said, "set your affections on things above, not on things on the earth."

Wheat has a head which when mature begins to bow. What a beautiful picture! The head of wheat becomes full of grain and slumps over. Bearing more fruit for the Christian should not lead to pride, but to humility. But for many, success doesn't cause the head to bow, but the nose to rise!

B. The sowing of the weeds.
v. 25 The enemy came by night and sowed these tares right among the wheat.
v. 39 Look at the end of v. 38: "children of the wicked one." Remember that the next time you hear someone trying to reconcile Islam with Christianity, making the common statement-"remember, we're all God's children!" This is a common belief, that all humans on the earth are God's children.

No! We're all God's creation, but not all His children. Jesus told a group that they were of their father, the devil. There are 2 family lines on this earth. Some have been born once, and others twice. Ye must be born again. Jesus is the way. That sounds narrow and politically incorrect. I have no desire to be narrow except for where God the Creator is narrow. And I'd rather be Biblically correct than politically so.

II. The Growing

So we've got children of God and children of the devil together in the field of the world, and the interesting thing is that they both look very much alike outwardly. What are we being taught here?

The devil attacks the kingdom of God by infiltration, and by planting imitators in the church. They may not know they aren't the real thing, and the others may not know, but Satan surely knows, as does God! They are counterfeit Christians. Paul called them "false brethren." [II Cor. 11:26]

They are fakes, phonies, but eventually their true colors show thru. In the meanwhile, they can be poison to a church. For this reason we are careful when someone wants to join the church. We need to know their testimony and what they trust in for salvation. That is the reason I do not open the doors of the Church until I have had a time to discern. They cannot be members of BMCC unless they are true members of the kingdom of God! There's 160 million members of churches in America today. Are they all born again? I wish! What a Christian nation we'd truly be, and we wouldn't be in the mess we're in today. Abortion is on the rise, teen pregnancy, cohabitation, divorce, suicide, drug and alcohol use, etc..and I'm talking about the church as well as the world, because the statistics are virtually the same in every category whether you're looking at the world or the church!

Billy Graham said his greatest mission field has been the roll books of churches. He cites that of the many thousands saved under his ministry, 70% are church members. They were tares among the wheat, but they got saved!

III. The Mowing

What good will pride do you in hell?

Remember, the tares look and act like wheat. They carry their Bible, pray, sing the songs, may even have a job in the church..but what are they trusting in for salvation? Sadly, in many cases, they trust in their being a good person, or a church member, baptized, or a s.s. teacher.

Some walked an aisle but were dealt with very poorly. Some churches just say come shake the preacher's hand if you want to be saved. But does that save them? They just fill out a card on them, but did anyone open the Bible and counsel? Does the prospect understand they are lost? How to be saved? Do they have a general grasp on faith and repentance, and know how Jesus is qualified to be their Savior? It's not even about "did you pray the prayer", but do you know that you know that you've been born again?!

You can shake preacher's hands from here to Timbuktu. You can fill out cards at a thousand altars. But if there's any doubt as to whether you've genuinely been born again then you need to work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Examine yourself whether ye be in the faith!

I'm not trying to shake anyone's faith, but to proclaim the truth of Jesus' parable for your sake! If you have assurance, then who am I to doubt it? But if you doubt it, who am I to give you assurance?

The Lord may return at any don't have all the time in the world..the mowing' is imminent. God is the reaper and the truth is indeed grim'..he will thrust in His sharp sickle and harvest the earth. He alone is capable of telling the difference correctly, and on that day it will be too late. The respectable thing to do is make sure you are saved while there is time!
