Text: Judges 1:1-7 (King James Version) THEME: Fireproof your Future -!
Subject: Equipping the Church for the Harvest"
"Father, I am your servant, willing and desiring to be used to bless your people."
Someone sent me a cartoon this week. It shows a mother and son walking home from church, and the mom says, "The next time Pastor Bob ask you what the sermon was about, don't say, About three hours'!"
Judges 1:1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?
Judges 1:2 And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.
Judges 1:3 And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the
Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand
Judges 1:5 And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
Judges 1:6 But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.
And Adonibezek said, Threescore
and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their
meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they
brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.
I want to start this message by prophesying to somebody:
God is in control, it doesn't matter what is happening in the economy, and it
doesn't matter what is happening on a political level, or whose in the white
It doesn't matter what they do to social security, healthcare, or anything else.
God is in control.
It's not the government or the president or anybody else. As a child of God your destiny is secure, God is your source and Heaven never has a shortage or needs a bail out.
America and Israel are much alike. They remind me of
each other. And both remind me of these 70 kings in our text: Dethroned and Disabled, and reduced to settling for
scraps which fall from above sparingly. America used to sit feasting at the table
of the KING of Kings, but we are fast descending to the role of the Joker in
the corner or the role of the beggar at the gate.
Judges is a book about incomplete victory...which stems from incomplete obedience. What is another word for 'incomplete obedience?' DISOBEDIENCE!
Partial obedience in your morals is disobedience. [I'm not so bad! / But are you still willfully choosing to do wrong in some areas?] If you aren't fully faithful you are unfaithful. If the only reason you come to church is because someone made you, you are unfaithful. If you tithe on about half of your paychecks you cannot call it a tithe. "you are unfaithful". It may be 10% of THAT check but if it's only 5% overall it is not credited by God as partial obedience, but disobedience. "Unfaithful" "A true conversion results in true faithfulness unto your Master"
Luke 6:43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Luke 6:44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.
Luke 6:45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.
why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
When it comes to our commitment to Christ, let's not do things halfway. Let's be all or nothing Christians and nothing is not a good option! Jesus gave all and so should we!
To our mature believers: the many young ones and
disciplees in our church see YOU as the end result of Christianity. It's a big responsibility to be a good
example...don't let them down!
1 Kings 18:21
21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
You are either committed or you are not.
And America cannot ride the fence. Either we are a Christian nation or we are not. Yes, we have freedom of religion, but many today are trying to exalt freedom FROM religion, and trying to tie our hands and gag our mouths in the process.
Our freedom of speech is going down the toilet. The
administration is trying to silence its critics and villainize any who dissent.
It's getting scary!
After turning [cramming] an 11 day journey from Egypt to the Promised Land into 40 years of meandering, Israel found itself IN the promised land, but not IN POSSESSION of it.
Israel did things halfway. In Joshua they were commanded to cross the river, conquer the enemy, and claim the inheritance. They crossed the river, then conquered SOME of the enemy, and stopped well short of finishing their conquest and claiming their inheritance. They wanted the blessings of the Promised Land, but didn't want to pay the price for complete victory. They wanted something free, much like most Americans today. They demanded their rights and wanted privileges, but didn't want to take responsibility. They were all take and no give.
They went back to their old ways of going in circles in the wilderness. Their progression was: Sin...Suffering
They would sin and naturally suffer for it, then cry out
to God and He would come to their rescue. But God is not bound to always be a
safety net for His people. He has come to our nation's rescue many times, but
like with Israel, His patience may soon run out and He may allow us to fall in
order to look up. If the only way we'll learn is by attending the school of hard
knocks, then, well...maybe He will
sign us up for class!
Judges is about a small group sent by God to reclaim a fallen nation, to speak as prophets of judgment and turn them away from backsliding to repentance, revival, and recovery.
Again, this book is about incomplete obedience and incomplete victory, and their first instance of both is right here in chapter one. They begin w/ a victory in the first 7 verses, but then fail to continue, they stop short, satisfied w/ partial obedience.
Retribution is a fearful aspect of God's character we
seldom think about. We like to focus
on His love and rewards in heaven, but we often fail to consider His holy,
perfect nature that demands justice and a payment for all
America's day is coming! We may think we are getting away with things now on earth but it is payday someday, and I believe his hour is drawing nigh. God may not pay weekly, monthly, or annually, but when He pays he pays in full!
We too should take warning at this...
23 ...behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.
7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
DISABLED means unable to accomplish work for God.
Some try but find themselves to be ineffective. And some have been disabled to the point that they have quit trying.
We as Christians and as a Nation must return to Holiness
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Matthew 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
A great part of claiming and walking in victory is
simply the decisions we make to be holy – to live holy lives.
The whole subject of holiness is so absolutely vital; especially in the days we are living in. The Church needs to always be reminding herself of this because it is God's great requirement of us – but the message becomes all the more urgent for us as we see the days getting darker.
Jesus is clearly coming very soon, and we must be in a state of readiness for His return. To be unashamed when He comes.
What is holiness? I guess most of us would have an idea of what we mean in a Christian's life when we talk about holiness, but let me just briefly define it for you this morning. In it's most basic and literal understanding, to be "holy" is "to be set apart". Holiness is the condition or the state of being "set apart", being "removed" from all that is sinful or worldly.
A.W.Tozer wrote … "God's holiness is not simply the best we know infinitely bettered. We know nothing like the divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural man is blind to it. He may fear God's power and admire his wisdom, but His holiness he cannot even imagine."
God is holy. "My thoughts are not your thoughts. Nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9) He's holy – He's set apart from the ways and thoughts of sinful man.
It's important to realise the imperative that Christians have to live lives of holiness - and WHY we are to do so. God does not say: "Be holy, and I'll make it worth your while." Not even "Be holy, and I'll bless you." NO. God says in His law (Leviticus 11:44 – and it's reiterated in the New Testament in 1 Peter 1:16) … "Be holy FOR I AM HOLY." Holiness is God's essential character. The journey of the believer is INTO HOLINESS. It's about becoming more and more distinct and separate from the fallen condition of this world. The opposite of holiness is "SAMENESS". To be unholy is to be just the same as everybody else. Our lives should be a stark contrast to those around us who have not come into right relationship with God.
So here is the race the Christian runs. Hebrews 12:14 commands us to "pursue … holiness without which no person will see the Lord." Everything in God's presence is holy – set apart for Him, sharing His holiness (e.g. the angels). All in His presence is holy.
Yet many Christians allow sin to rule them.
Romans 6:14--"For sin shall not have dominion over you"
A. Many Christians Are Defeated.
1. Some Have Been Overcome [Ambushed].
I Peter 5:8--"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour."
2. Some Have Been Outmanned.
We try to go the battle alone and we are no match for Satan.
Ephesians 6:10--"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might."
3. Some Have Been Outsmarted.
Ephesians 6:11--"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
II Corinthians 2:11--"Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices."
4. Some Have Been Outgunned.
Ephesians 6:13--"Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
1 Cor. 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
A. Remember Three Things About Satan:
1. Satan Is A Definite Fact.
Not a mythological character.
Not just a force or influence, but a real person.
He has life, intelligence, a will, a feeling.
2. Satan Is A Destructive Force.
He is out to defeat you.
Christianity, Christian America, Church, Family, Person.
3. Satan Is A Defeated Foe.
B. How Do You Gain Victory?
The only true victory is complete victory. America today fights to a stalemate, or a draw. Let's not make the same mistake in our personal lives.
1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
In this verse, Paul the apostle is giving testimony to the church at Corinth that in Christ there is victory.
Victory Does Not Come By Regretting.
Victory Does Not Come By Resolving.
Victory Does Not Come By Renouncing.
Victory Does Not Come By Rededicating.
Victory Comes By Receiving The Victory Already Made Possible Through Jesus.
Outside of Christ there is no victory.
There is no good excuse for being overcome by Satan
In John 16:33 we read, These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
This king is just like the devil, he wants to oppress you and rob you of the benefits of your salvation. Many of God's people live a beggar's life style while they are the rightful heirs to the kingdom of God.
Other Biblical examples of this:
1 Sam 20:14-15
14And thou shalt not only while yet I live shew me the kindness of the LORD, that I die not:
15But also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
2 Sam 9:1
1And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan's sake?
2 Sam 9:3-4
3And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet.
4And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lo'debar.
Here was the son of Jonathan Living like a beggar, Why? (He didn't know anything about the covenant between his father and David.
Satan is holding many of God's people in bondage to guilt and shame, (slavery) living like beggars because they don't know what the covenant says.
1. LODABAR IS AN UNPLEASANT PLACE,,,,,,,,,
NOT ONLY WAS MEPHIBOSHETH IN LODABAR HE HAD BEEN MADE LAME BY THE CARELSSNESS OF SOMEONE ELSE..
2 Samuel 4:4
And Jonathan, Saul's son, had a son that was lame of his feet. He was five years old when the tidings came of Saul and Jonathan out of Jezreel, and his nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to pass, as she made haste to flee, that he fell, and became lame. And his name was Mephibosheth
BAD DECISIONS MAY PUT US IN LODABAR BUT OTHER TIMES WE MAY JUST END UP THERE,,,,EITHER WAY IT IS THE LOW POINTS IN LIFE AND JUST BAD CIRUMSTANCES,,,
OUR LODABAR MAY BE A SICKNESS
OUR LODABAR MIGHT BE FIANCIAL
OUR LODABAR MAY BE A FAMILY SITUATION
BUT ONE THING IS CERTAIN AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER SEEMS
LIKE MOST OF US HAVE A LODABAR EXPERIENCE.
2. MEPHIBOSETH HAD EATEN AT THE KINGS TABLE BEFORE ,, America has eaten at the Kings Table ,HE WAS GRANDSON OF KING SAUL….HE KNEW WHAT IT WAS LIKE,,,,AND NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEAK WAS GONE AND NOW HE WAS BEGGING FOR CRUMBS.
,Thank God LODABAR IS JUST A TEMPORARY PLACE,,,,
THIS WAS NOT THE END OF THE LINE FOR METHIBOSHETH,,,,
3. WHY WAS IT NOT A PERMANENT PLACE,,,,FOR METHIBOHETH?
A. DAVID REMEMERED SOMETHING,,,,,,DAVID REMEMBERED THE COVENANT,,,,,WITH JONATHAN,,,,METHIBOSHETHS FATHER…..AND IT WAS SEALED IN BLOOD,,,,
LODABAR IS NOT A PERMANENT PLACE FOR YOU THIS MORNING BECAUSE YOU HAVE A COVENANT SEALED IN BLOOD ,,,
B. DAVID SENT SOMEONE TO CARRY ,,,,OH THANK YOU JESUS,,, DAVID SENT SOMEONE TO CARRY METHIBOSHETH OUT OF LODABAR,,
WE DON'T HAVE TO TRY TO WALK OUT, ,,WE DON'T HAVE TO TRY TO RUN OUT,,,,,,JESUS IS SENDING THE HOLY SPIRIT TO CARRY US OUT,,,,,,,
B. METHIBOSHETH WAS GOING TO ONCE MORE TASTE THE BLESSINGS OF THE KING'S HOUSEHOLD……
The Syrophenician woman said, Just let me have the crumbs that fall from the children's table, even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs, (She didn't know or have part in the covenant.)
But the sad part is when we are covenant sons and daughters and because of ignorance, Satan oppresses us and brings us into bondage, and has us living like beggars.
Here is the bottom Line: You are not a beggar, Satan has no authority to hold you in bondage of guilt or shame to your past, You are a covenant Son or Daughter of God. The King is calling you to his banqueting table,
and at his table no one sees what you were, only what you are. When you take your rightful place at the table, you rule and reign as kings.
. He's setting you apart to be uniquely His – separate from all that is Ungodly.
disables in many ways, but seems to have the most success by using the following
BIGG SINS against
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
